ACNE

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the oil secreting glands on the body become blocked and inflamed. This occurs at the base of a hair follicle. Acne can occur on the face, neck, shoulders, chest, back, and even the thighs. It is estimated that over 85% of young adults between 12-24 years of age suffer from acne.

There are many different types of acne, but the most common are:

1. Whiteheads-an infected hair follicle that is still closed on the top of the skin.
2. Blackheads-an infected hair follicle that is open to the air. The black color is not from dirt, but a color change that occurs due to being exposed to the air.
3. Pustule-(pimple) an inflamed area that contains pus and has a red base.
4. Papule-small red bumps that do not contain pus
5. Cyst-a pustule that grew larger and deeper, which may cause scarring.
6. Nodules-large painful deep lesions within the skin.

The exact cause of acne is not known, but doctors believe there are key factors involved:
1. Change in hormone levels
2. Family history of acne
3. Friction/Pressure over the affected area.
4. Picking or scrubbing the skin too hard
5. Environmental factors that increase pollution or humidity.
6. Diet-studies demonstrate this is not a cause of acne, but we recommend avoiding the foods that worsen your acne.
